Livelihood

The Asia Community Development Organization (ACDO) is committed to strengthening sustainable livelihoods and improving food security for vulnerable and marginalized communities across Afghanistan. Since 2023, ACDO has been an active member of the Food Security and Agriculture Cluster, working closely with humanitarian and development partners to support communities in building resilient and sustainable income sources.

The Food Security and Agriculture Cluster (FSAC) in Afghanistan is the main coordination body for humanitarian food security and agriculture interventions. Its core goal is to ensure that vulnerable communities have reliable access to food and livelihoods, while strengthening national capacity for food security analysis, planning, and response.

Food Security and Agriculture Cluster (FSAC)

The Food Security and Agriculture Cluster (FSAC) is a humanitarian coordination mechanism led by FAO and WFP under the UN cluster system. It brings together UN agencies, NGOs, government institutions, and local partners to coordinate emergency food security and agriculture responses in Afghanistan.

Main goal

The Food Security and Agriculture Cluster in Afghanistan works to ensure that vulnerable communities have reliable access to food and sustainable livelihoods. Its overarching aim is to reduce hunger, strengthen resilience, and protect households from the impacts of conflict, economic shocks, and climate-related disasters. By coordinating humanitarian food security and agriculture interventions, the cluster helps communities move from emergency response toward long-term stability and resilience.

Key objectives

The cluster’s objectives focus on providing leadership and coordination for food security and agriculture programs, ensuring that emergency responses are timely and effective, and building the capacity of national institutions to analyze and respond to food insecurity. It promotes policy alignment with national priorities, facilitates information sharing among partners, and supports resilience through agricultural recovery and livelihood strategies. By monitoring food security trends, disseminating best practices, and strengthening collaboration among humanitarian actors, the FSAC ensures that interventions are impactful, transparent, and sustainable.

ACDO’s livelihood focus

ACDO’s livelihood interventions focus on enhancing agricultural productivity, promoting climate-resilient farming practices, and creating opportunities for sustainable income generation among rural households. Through these initiatives, ACDO aims to empower communities to reduce poverty, improve food security, and build long-term economic resilience.

ACDO interventions

In Paktika Province, ACDO successfully implemented an agriculture support project with financial assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Through this initiative, ACDO introduced advanced agricultural technologies and distributed improved saplings to 100 farmers in targeted communities.

This intervention is expected to benefit approximately 700 family members, including 20% female and 80% male beneficiaries, by improving household income opportunities and agricultural productivity.

The primary objective of this project is to enhance food security, agricultural sustainability, and economic resilience among vulnerable families in the region. By introducing improved saplings and modern farming techniques, the project supports farmers in increasing crop yields, improving land management practices, and promoting environmentally sustainable agriculture through reforestation and better land utilization.

In addition, the project contributes to community empowerment by creating opportunities for income diversification and sustainable livelihood development. Farmers are encouraged to adopt improved agricultural practices that reduce reliance on traditional and less efficient farming methods while increasing productivity and long-term sustainability.

ACDO also prioritizes inclusive participation, ensuring that women and marginalized groups have access to livelihood opportunities and agricultural support services. By strengthening farmers’ knowledge, skills, and resources, ACDO aims to build community resilience and contribute to sustainable development in rural areas.

Through its livelihood initiatives, ACDO continues to support communities in improving their income sources, food security, and overall well-being, while contributing to long-term development and stability across its areas of operation.
